Byars, OK (July 13, 2019) – A man from Oklahoma City was killed in a three-vehicle crash that also left a Newalla couple with serious injuries. The collision occurred on Route 177 at County Road 142 in the town of Byars.
Police stated that 45-year-old Stephan W. La Pointe, of Oklahoma City, was traveling north in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when he entered the opposite lane and sideswiped a 1996 Freightliner tractor-trailer. La Pointe continued north in the opposite lane and collided with a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
EMS pronounced La Pointe deceased at the scene. The operator of the pickup that was hit by La Pointe, 54-year-old Randall R. Recher, and his passenger, 53-year-old Velma K. Recher, both of Newalla, were pinned inside the vehicle. They were extricated by emergency responders and airlifted to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Randall was admitted in serious condition and has since been discharged, while Velma was admitted in critical condition but no further word has been released.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, James L. Ramey, 32, of Bristow, was uninjured in the collision. Police are investigating all factors related to the crash.
